Volunteer Opportunities
Culpepper Garden welcomes volunteers of all ages. All of our onsite programs are volunteer- or partner-led and engage residents in a variety of ways, including recreational activities, wellness programs, musical and theatrical performances and bingo and games. We welcome faith-based, scouting and business groups as well as individuals to volunteer regularly or as part of team-building volunteer event. Skill Level: Unskilled
Volunteers plan and implement a variety of arts and crafts projects and activities! Examples of activities that can be done either onsite or via a virtual meeting platform include painting, jewelry making, mask decorating, scrapbooking, knitting, sewing, crocheting, and making decorations. New ideas for projects are always welcome! Arts & crafts volunteers can also choose to do at-home crafting projects as part of this specific volunteer role, including activities like creating memory books for residents and creating Holiday Care Kits.

Great opportunity for book lovers! Lead lively and engaging group discussions around books from a variety of genres and topics! Bilingual and/or individuals who have strong Sign Language skills are strongly encouraged to apply for this role!

Volunteer(s) will assist with a variety of tasks, including processing donations, to include data entry, copying checks, processing and mailing thank you letters, and telephone or email follow up with donors, as needed, assist with aspects of fundraising event planning, including processing mailings, proofing, attendee lists, telephoning potential silent auction contributors and other duties as requested to lead to a successful donor and fundraising event. Volunteers will also occasionally attend and assist with fundraising events. Willingness to travel to offsite locations is a plus but not required.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to help improve the outdoor spaces of Culpepper Garden and make this community a wonderful place for the residents who reside here! Examples of such activities include, but are not limited to, replacing mulch, redoing flower beds, planting flowers, vegetables, and other types of plants, grounds clean up, removing invasive species, redoing tomato stands, and grounds remodeling and renovation (i.e., re-doing the walkways, putting in new planters, putting in a new flag pole, etc.). Experts on plants and various other topics related to management of outdoor spaces may also have the opportunity to lead educational workshops for other small groups of volunteers!

Great opportunity for history lovers! Volunteer(s) will have the opportunity to lead lively and engaging discussions on a variety of topics related to past historical events!

Help make Culpepper Garden a safe and inclusive community through breaking down language barriers! Volunteers can help with translating documents and other printed materials, as well as provide individual and group assistance to residents onsite at various activities, programs, and events! Volunteers can choose to assist with one role or with both!

Volunteers lead one or more group sessions for activities that utilize meditative and/or therapeutic practices that help individuals develop skills for managing anxiety and maintaining a calm and peaceful state of mind. Examples of classes include, but are not limited to, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, and Reiki. Groups can meet both onsite and virtually depending on how much access residents and the instructors have to arts and crafts materials and virtual meeting platforms.

Volunteers can lead one or more small group exercise classes for residents. For this role volunteers must be currently certified in the type of exercise they are implementing and are required to have previous experience or training in providing group exercise classes for individuals with varying levels of mobility. Examples of these types of exercise classes include, but are not limited to, Thai Chi, Chair Yoga or Yoga, SAIL, AMOB, and Chair One Chair Zumba.

Volunteers can lead fun and engaging group activities (e.g., Game Nights, Bingo events, etc.) or provide assistance with special holiday meals (e.g., helping residents with getting their trays to their tables, helping in the assembly line, assisting with set up and clean up, etc.).

Volunteers can lead one or more small group exercise classes for residents. This role does not require current certifications, however, the volunteer must have prior experience with leading small groups in the type of exercise they are implementing, and that they have a high level of comfort in leading group exercise classes for individuals with varying levels of mobility. Examples of classes that could potentially be offered include Walking Group, Video-led Chair Exercise Classes, and Low-impact dance and/or movement classes that can be done either in a chair or standing.

This volunteer position is essential to keeping residents and community partners and volunteers informed about the various volunteer initiatives taking place at Culpepper Garden and helping Culpepper Garden build its volunteer base. This role involves coordinating and implementing monthly Volunteer Newsletter, including gathering and assembling content, printing, copying, posting and taking down various Volunteer Program flyers/posters/announcements, and sending updates or information to the Development and Communications Director on any Volunteer Program events and activities for Social Media posts.
Skill Level: Unskilled but has requirements around physical abilities
Volunteers assist with such tasks as, printing and posting flyers; helping with setting up the space prior to the distribution; providing additional support to current AFAC volunteers during the initial sign up; assisting with initial set up of the space; unloading items from the AFAC delivery van and organizing the bins, boxes, and crates according to what items go to which tables, and unloading items onto tables; packing bags of food to be delivered to residents; gathering up leftover food and materials in preparation for pick up; and re-setting room to its original configuration. Volunteers who choose to assist with day-of distribution process must be comfortable with standing for long periods of time and/or lifting heavy boxes, bins, crates, and heavy bags of groceries.

Current Virtual Volunteer projects and activities that Culpepper Garden is currently implementing include, but are not limited to, DIY Memory Books, DIY Holiday Care Kits, and virtual trainings on a variety of topics (e.g., how to use your electronic device for accessing online services, how to use and operate zoom, etc.).
